Caps at Devils #fancystats (and beyond) Recap

The Caps beat the Devils 4-0 (hey, shutout!) in regulation. They lost the even-strength shot-attempt battle to the Devils, 28-23.

-Alzner and Kuznetsov led the Caps with a +7 on-ice shot attempt differential

-Orpik had the worst shot attempt differential at -1

-Alzner was on the ice for the most Caps shot attempts (16)

-Backstrom was on the ice for the most shot attempts against (17)

-Backstrom also faced the toughest zone starts, starting 12% of shifts in the offensive zone

-Ward and Laich faced the easiest zone starts, starting 75% of shifts in the offensive zone

-Nate Schmidt, possession monster, update: He was scratched in favor of Hillen. Enough said.

NON-FANCY THINGS:

-Mike Green is very important to the Caps and needs to be re-signed immediately. Take a look at his beauty of a slapshot. It’s Classic Green…and props to Beagle, who had a great outing and two primary assists, for helping to make that happen.

-Alex Ovechkin shot the puck a lot and was finally rewarded. After hitting the post a few times, he put one past Cory Schneider to give the Caps a 3-0 lead in the third period.

-He also earned a penalty shot (which he missed) after being tripped by Marek Zidlicky.

-Backstrom got the Caps’ second and fourth goals, the latter of which was an empty-netter. The Young Guns are all grown up, guys.

-The PP and PK units on both teams got a decent workout. There were nine penalties, including fighting majors for Michael Latta and Seth Helgeson.

-With tonight’s win, the Caps wrap up a weeklong road trip having earned five of a possible six points (four of which came from Metro rivals!)

-Holtby was pretty fab tonight and earned his 13th career shutout.

-You know who else had a pretty great night? Pat’s insanely adorable nephew, that’s who. As a huge Caps (and Ovi!) fan, he got one puck from the Russian Machine and another from an official. And to make tonight’s win even sweeter, he also got one of Ovi’s sticks–delivered personally by the man himself. Too freaking cute, folks.
